about
Vitória Galli was born in Bebedouro, Brazil, in 1995, and lives and works in Lisbon.

She graduated in law from the University of Coimbra in 2019 and has built a self-taught textile art practice.
Her research starts from watching natural cycles, the turning of the seasons and memory, both affective and dreamlike, as fields of symbolic construction.
She works with tufting, punch needle, weaving and embroidery, keeping a tactile relationship with natural wool, and makes surfaces that explore colour, texture and the repetition of gesture.
Her work seeks to stretch the border between the abstract inside and the visible outside, evoking landscapes and states of feeling tied to the feminine, to esotericism, to the rawness of nature and to the idea of constant movement.
how she works
Almost always in natural wool, on tapestry cloth, and always by hand.
-
tufting
A gun pushes the yarn through the stretched cloth, stitch by stitch, and leaves a dense, soft pile. It is the technique of the rugs and the larger pieces.
-
punch needle
A hollow needle takes the wool through the cloth, by hand, and forms small, even loops. Slower than tufting, it allows fine lines and detail.
-
hand weaving
Weaving by hand on a loom: the weft passes, thread by thread, between the threads of the warp.
-
free embroidery
Embroidery by hand, with stitches chosen to suit the drawing, without following a grid.
